HANSEL AND GRETEL
by Michael Morpurgo. Wonderful color illustrations by Emma Chichester Clark. Condition: NEW 2008 Walker Books hardcover (decorated boards & end pages) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. The DJ has a "non-shedding" form of glitter decorating the house - if you wish, I can omit the mylar jacket. Content: Leaving the basic framework of the Grimm Brothers' tale intact, Morpurgo has altered details of the plot, creating a story in which strong familial bonds allow the innocent brother and sister to overcome evil. A happy, self-sufficient family is cursed by a witch, Belladonna, who falls in love with Gabriel, the children's father, and turns their mother into a weeping willow tree. She enchants Gabriel, who marries her, but she soon realizes that she will never become an integral part of the family. Overcome with jealousy, she creates a sudden famine that kills nearly all of the plants and animals, then twice convinces Gabriel to lose his children in the forest, where she entices them into her little gingerbread cottage for a meal of pancakes and syrup. After each reference to the witch's black magic comes the refrain: "It was nothing for her to do that." The moment Gretel pushes Belladonna into her own oven, the children's world is instantly filled with love, beauty, good health, and happiness. Folk-art-style paintings, in watercolor with colored-pencil outlines and facial features, range in size from small decorations and vertical strips of various widths to full-page scenes. The story is written in language geared to young children, but the dark tone bumps up the age for which it would seem appropriate. Grades 2-4. [2 copies]

THE LEGEND OF ROSEPETAL
text by Clemens Brentano. Translated by Anthea Bell. Unique color illustrations by the great Lisbeth Zwerger (Gift of the Magi). Condition: Gently pre-read 1985 Picture Book Studio USA hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), no printing given. Light edge wear to DJ. DJ is price-clipped. Blank bookplate bottom front end page. No major problems - just pre-read. Content: A lover of roses with most of her kingdon made into a rose garden, Princess Rosalina makes a pact with an old enchantress to obtain the most beautiful rosebush of all. Brentano's Romanticist fairy tale seems to include every fairy tale device imaginable in conjunction with heavy dollops of symbolism, death and cruelty. There is one bizarre or cruel turn after another. Perhaps one could make a case that it shows that one can survive child abuse. Almost half of the story concerns Rosepetal's vain and selfish mother. Rosepetal finally arrives on the scene only to be killed when her jealous mother accidently drives a sharp comb into her head. Not to fear, Rosepetal is preserved within seven glass coffins. After her mother's death, she awakens to a cruel foster mother. Now she is threatened with drowning and hit daily so that her "face was all black and blue, as if she had been eating blueberries." Sensitive souls will flee before an odd light tone is added at the end. Rosepetal marries a handsome prince and is sent a little prince by Heaven, who has related this hair-raising tale for a piece of gingerbread. Zweiger uses the same flowing line embellished with rich pattern found in the Mouse King and Gift of the Magi, but her colors are much darker in keeping with the tone of this work. Brentano's text, as translated by Bell, is skillfully written, and the many strands of the tale are tied together. An unusual fairy tale not for the very young! [1 copy available]

MISTER KING (Bratislava Grand Prix Winner)
by Raija Siekkinen. Wonderful color illustrations by Hannu Taina. Translated from the Finnish by Tim Steffa. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1995 Harcourt Brace hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), fourth printing. Intended as a school supplemental book, there is a written note on the inside cover re classroom assignment (2 words). Content: A fairy tale from Finland. A king lives alone in a majestic house with a glass dome. He reads in his library books about other kings, but unlike them, he doesn't have "subjects." His aloneness is immense, and he can only dream of people shouting "hurrah" for their king. One morning a huge, furry talking cat arrives and identifies herself as a "tiger." The king welcomes his first subject and does his best to serve the cat. Gradually, he begins to rediscover his world, seeing everything anew through the cat's eyes. When the king passes a mirror, he says "hurrah" and salutes. Soon another house is built nearby, then a whole town, and all the people salute him as he passes, calling him "Mister King," for that's what he has written on his mailbox. The author's captivating tale thrusts readers' imaginations onto that distant shore where anything can happen. The relative absence of perspective in the artist's exultant watercolors adds to the quaint nature and mystery of Mister King's palace, adding an extra dimension to what the text already offers. Ages 5-9. [1 copy available]

MOTHER GOOSE'S LITTLE TREASURES
by Iona Opie & Rosemary Wells. Adorable color animals by Rosemary Wells. Condition: NEW 2007 Candlewick large hard cover and DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: This third collection by Opie and Wells includes 22 less-familiar rhymes. According to Opie's introduction, "…the little treasures in this book…are the most mysterious fragments of our shared memory." Some rhymes are silly ("Little old dog sits under a chair,/Twenty-five grasshoppers/snarled in his hair….") Others are surreal. For example, "Mother, May I?" poses the question, "Mother, may I go out swimming?," which is answered, "Yes, my darling daughter;/Hang your clothes on a hickory limb,/But don't go near the water." Meanwhile, the picture shows a little girl, waist-deep in a pool, pulling a little boat and holding a doll that looks just like the little girl, which does transform this playful verse into something, yes, mysterious. Many of the characters make multiple appearances, and many are Wells's characteristic rabbits and cats. [1copy available]

This learned lady has roamed the realms of fable and myth and returned with the surprising truth about such awe-inspiring creatures as the sphinx, the griffin, the unicorn, the phoenix, and other age-old favorites. Missus Milliwhistle's troll, for instance, is actually a long-suffering fellow who, because of the constant clattering of goat hooves over his bridge, has never gotten a moment's sleep. And the famous Gorgon, Medusa, is not some cruel creature who turns people to stone, she uses her powerful stare to create the delicate porcelain and glass animal figurines so beloved of young girls. OLD TURTLE (ABBY Book of the Year for 1993)
by Douglas Wood. Beautiful, soft watercolors by Cheng-Khee Chee. Condition: Gently pre-read, If at all, 2003 Scholastic hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), third printing. Blank bookplate inside loose end page. The book has been perused, but sections appear unread. No major problems. Content: When all of creation--trees, stones, ants, the sky, fish—-begins arguing over who or what God is, quiet Old Turtle is the only one who has the wisdom and ability to see beyond herself to capture the essence. The debate escalates until Old Turtle finally speaks: "STOP!" She accepts and incorporates the beliefs of all the creatures: "God is indeed deep," she says to the fish in the sea, "and much higher than high," she tells the mountains. "God is gentle and powerful. Above all things and within all things... God IS." Old Turtle, after silencing the crowds with her understanding, makes a prediction about the appearance of a new "family of beings" in the world. These beings, human beings, do appear, and soon are fighting among themselves over the nature of God. It is only when people start listening to the mountains and winds and stones and stars that they actually begin to hear--and to heal the earth. A graceful fable, with elegant, dreamlike watercolors by illustrator Cheng-Khee Chee, Douglas Wood's modern-day classic makes a hushed but strong environmental statement, as well as a plea for universal acceptance. ONCE UPON A PRINCESS AND A PEA
by Ann Campbell. Alice-in-Wonderland-like color illustrations by Kathy Osborn Young. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1995 Stewart Tabori hardcover (pictorial boards) and DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. Light edge wear to DJ edges. Content: In this tongue-in-cheek version of a familiar Andersen tale, princess Esmerelda runs away from home to avoid marrying a 53-year-old toothless king. At the same time, a prince visits three castles where prospective princesses not only fail to appeal, but also fail the celebrated pea-under-the-mattress test. Making her way down the road on a dark and stormy night, Esmerelda meets none other than the prince (a Peewee Herman look-alike), who is heading home in his red roadster. They take an instant liking to one another, but the prince's mother insists on performing the classic test, which the princess passes. Young's full-color illustrations, seen frequently on New Yorker covers, have a modish, art-deco quality, giving the story an amusing, sophisticated character. PETROSINELLA: A Neapolitan Rapunzel
retold & illustrated by Diane Stanley. Soft, lovely color illustrations. Condition: NEW 1997 Dial Books hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. Tiny edge wear top DJ spine with light shelf wear to DJ in the form of pale "wrinkle." Interior perfect. With blank bookplate. Content: Stanley offers a Neapolitan version of Rapunzel that predates the Grimms by 200 years. Petrosinella ("parsley" in Italian) is similar in many ways to the more familiar Grimm tale, but here the women play a more active part in the plot. It is Petrosinella's pregnant mother (not her father) who steals the parsley from the ogress - the event that leads to the girl's imprisonment. Likewise, it is the girl who discovers the secret to her release (three hidden acorns) and who implements the steps that cause the destruction of the enchantress. Stanley's watercolors and colored inks are rendered in royal blues and verdant greens - a fitting backdrop for the young woman and the prince with whom she falls in love, and an effective contrast to the ugly hag. Visual parallels, however, abound; note the folds in the cliffs, the ogress's face, and the bulldog's jowls in the scene with the first acorn. The illustrations have been published before but now Stanley's own narrative spin replaces John Edward Taylor's 1847 translation, used in the book's 1981 publication. Questions welcome. THE RANDOM HOUSE BOOK OF FAIRY TALES
adapted by Amy Ehrlich. Lovely soft, misty color illustrations by Diane Goode. Intro by Bruno Bettelheim. Condition: NEW 1985 Random House hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), no printing given. DJ shows some small amount of shelf wear. Content: Nineteen popular traditional tales selected from the works of the Grimm brothers, Andersen, Perrault and others form the contents of this fine collection. Ehrlich drew upon many sources, listed in back but not keyed to individual tales, and her literary but not effusive retellings remain faithful, for the most part, to the common canon. (Exceptions include Hansel's holding out a knuckle to the witch rather than a chicken bone; Rapunzel's twins are missing; and the prince's mere presence rather than a kiss wakes the Sleeping Beauty in the Wood.) The soft pastel colors of Goode's pencil and watercolor illustrations give a misty, faraway quality to Once-upon-a-time. Tales: Emperor's New Clothes, Sleeping Beauty in the Wood; Elves and Shoemaker; Rapunzel; 12 Dancing Princesses; Jack and the Beanstalk; Snow White; Puss In Boots; Beauty and the Beast; The Frog Prince; Valiant Little Tailor; Red Riding Hood; Real Princess; Steadfast Tin Soldier; Cinderella; Hansel and Gretel; Rumpelstiltskin; and Thumbelina.
