THE AESOP FOR CHILDREN
by Aesop. Great Milo Winter color illustrations. Condition: Gently pre-read 2006 Scholastic large soft cover, 2nd printing. Content: Originally published in 1919, the illustrations have lost none of their appeal - and the stories, of course, are considerably older. One hundred twenty-six best-loved fables of Aesop. Reviewer: "This is a more complete collection [than other books], the fables are more fully developed with rich language, and the beautiful illustrations set it above the rest." and "This collection of some of the most memorable of Aesop's Fables is written in clear and elegant prose, beautifully illustrated, and perfect for pleasure reading and instruction. We use it as part of our homeschooling writing exercises. Our daughter reads a story, rewrites it in her own words, and illustrates it. We discuss the saying that attends each story and also the phrases that have become the common property of all people, for example, "a wolf in sheeps clothing". I cannot say enough good things about this book. At its low price this must be one of the best bargains on the planet. Enough said." Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

AMERICAN FAIRY TALES: From Rip Van Winkle to the Rootabaga Stories
compiled by Neil Philip. B&W illustrations by Michael McCurdy. Preface by Alison Lurie. Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, 1996 Hyperian hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. DJ is price-clipped. Content: An impressive collection of 12 stories representing the development of the American fairy tale from 1819 to 1922. Leaving behind the gloomy atmosphere and more formal language of their European counterparts, these literary selections reflect the landscape, egalitarian philosophy, and forward-looking optimism of America. Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle" is firmly placed in the Katskill Mountains, while Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Feathertop" is filled with New England superstitions. The contentment of ordinary life is emphasized in Horace E. Scudder's "The Rich Man's Place" and Laura E. Richards's "The Golden Windows." The heroine of Louisa May Alcott's "Rosy's Journey" is solidly self-reliant, and the protagonists in Howard Pyle's "The Apple of Contentment" and Ruth Plumly Thompson's "The Princess Who Could Not Dance" are cheerful and independent. L. Frank Baum's "The Glass Dog" and Carl Sandburg's "How They Broke Away to Go to the Rootabaga Country" portray inventiveness and the pioneer spirit. Sandburg's tale, as well as M.S.B.'s "What They Did Not Do on the Birthday of Jacob Abbott B., Familiarly Called Snibbuggledyboozledom," employ a unique American idiom with their zany words and phrases. Independent readers may find the archaic writing of some of these selections difficult to deal with; others are quite readable. Each story is introduced by information about the author; sources are included. McCurdy's skillfully executed black-and-white woodcuts, both full-page scenes and vignettes, illustrate each tale. This volume provides a rich read-aloud for families who like quality literature, and will also be of interest to children's-literature students and folklorists. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
retold and beautifully illustrated by Jan Brett. Condition: PLEASE READ / UNREAD, BUT NOT PERFECT, c. 1993 Clarion hardcvoer & DJ (in mylar jacket), 8th printing. Problem: the DJ shows edgewear plus the top back DJ edge has a 3/4 inch chip at the flap. It is now protected in mylar. Interior perfect. Content: Everyone knows the story of Beauty and the Beast, but seldom has this story been so beautifully illustrated. I should say "lavishly" illustrated. To see it is to love it. This beloved old French fairy tale has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years. Beauty, as you may recall, is the youngest daughter of a devoted father who has fallen on hard times. Returning from a journey, he picks a rose for his daughter, enraging the owner of the rosebush, the fearsome boarlike Beast who inhabits a nearby castle. As payment for the rose, Beauty must leave her family and reside in the Beast's castle as his companion. She gradually comes to appreciate the Beast's kind nature, and, after leaving him to visit her family, realizes that she has fallen in love! Beauty willingly returns to her Beast, in time to break the spell that has caused his current, beastly countenance and restore him (and the servants in the castle) to their human forms. THE BEE-MAN OF ORN
by Frank R. Stockton. Color illustration by P. J. Lynch. DVD details Lynch's artistic process in illustrating this book. Condition: NEW 2003 Candlewick large hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first U. S. edition, first printing. Free DVD. Content: Stockton's classic story now appears in a large-format picture book with Lynch's dramatic illustrations. The unlikely hero is Bee-man, an old, "ugly, untidy, shriveled, and sun-burnt" figure who is contented with his life as a beekeeper until a young sorcerer informs him that he has been "transformed from something else." Seized with a determination to discover and recover his previous form, the Bee-man goes on a quest that takes him to a stately palace where he learns that noblemen sometimes act ignobly, into a cavern where he rescues a baby from a monstrous dragon, and to a village where he restores the infant to its mother and decides upon his own future. Lynch's spirited artwork, richly detailed and darkly atmospheric, provides a series of imaginative settings and creates a romantic and broadly appealing vision of this original fairy tale. Large in scale and epically cinematic in effect, the beautiful watercolor-and-gouache paintings create a mysterious "otherworld" that will remain part of children's imaginations long after they have graduated to novel-length fantasies. With pictures large enough for sharing with groups, this edition is a read-aloud treasure for good listeners. A DVD giving a behind-the-scenes look at the artist at work is included in the book. Fantastic! [2 copies available]

THE BLACK SNOWMAN
by Phil Mendez. Wonderful color illustrations by Carole Byard. Condition: NEW 1990 Scholastic soft cover, first printing. Tiny edge wear. Content: Jacob Miller is an inner-city boy who hates being black and poor. He reluctantly assists his little brother Peewee in making a black snowman from the filthy snow in the back alley. The figure comes alive after they unknowingly drape him in a fragment of the magical kente, a cloth worn by African storytellers for hundreds of years. The snowman challenges Jacob's outlook on life by telling him all the wonderful things that are black, and mysteriously conjuring forth brave heroes from African tribal tradition. When Peewee is trapped inside a burning building, the snowman shows Jacob a way to save his brother while exhorting the boy to believe in himself. Using mystical elements and the power of the past, Mendez, in his first book, weaves a stirring tale of Jacob's transformation from a bitter victim of his situation into a proud fighter for his life. Byard's haunting color drawings bring to life not only the snowman; they successfully portray the many contrasts between Jacob's dour moods, Peewee's optimism, the dingy apartment and the eerie parade of stately African tribesmen. The valuable lesson inherent in The Black Snowman is not just for black children but for all who struggle for identity within their own worlds. Ages 7-10. Questions welcome. [1 copy available.]

BLUE MOON MOUNTAIN
by Geraldine McCaughrean. Beautiful color illustrations by Nicki Palin and Tomislav Tomic. Condition: NEW 2006 Templar (UK) hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), revised first edition. Content: Reviewer: "Award-winning children's author Geraldine McCaughrean presents Blue Moon Mountain, a fantastic children's picturebook about a special young girl who discovers the hidden land where mythological creatures dwell. The Wyvern, the Sphinx, the Roc, the Giant from Jack and the Beanstalk, and many more were unfairly depicted as villains in the fairy tales about them; they needed a place to live, and that place was the magical land of Blue Moon Mountain. For only once in years does a white moon path open and show the way to the mysterious land; young Joy, born during a blue moon, has the opportunity to travel there herself and meet the all the fabulous creatures, including the legendary unicorn, who misses his chance to return to Blue Moon Mountain and lives in a stable near Joy while waiting for the next blue moon. A delightful romp, wonderfully illustrated in full color. " The mythology of each creature is provided in a section at the end of the book. [1 copy available]

CALEB BELDRAGON'S CHRONICLE OF THE THREE COUNTIES
text & beautiful color illustrations by Paul Warren. Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, 1996 Turner Publishing over-sized hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), first US edition, first printing. Light shelf wear bottom and top spine. Interior clean & tight. Includes a self bookmark with the Gibblin alphabet. Content: Long oppressed by the ruthless Lord Mulciber, the Gibblins hope to restore their exiled king by finding a legendary stone called the Malbigon. Warren poses a challenge to readers of this book: recover the Malbigon, a magical gemstone, and return it to its rightful place in order to restore peace to a land in turmoil. An elaborately imagined kingdom, once ruled by a good king who was loved and respected by his followers, has been overthrown by his wicked brother, and evil abounds. "First, the Ids. It is true to say that these sour-faced creatures consider themselves superior to everyone else." "Next, the Urgs. These ugly, restless creatures roam the countryside on the lookout for mischief and are best described as a species of goblin whose main attributes are laziness and greed." "Lastly, the Gibblins... They are cheerful and easygoing, sharp-eyed, and nimble-fingered, with a natural affinity for the land." Intricate illustrations of the creatures, the land they inhabit, maps, calendars, and family trees help bring this fascinating mythical place to life. Budding science fiction and fantasy fans will delight in attempting to decode the secret language of the good-natured Gibblins in order to restore peace and usurp the evil ruler. Questions welcome. A CHILD'S GARDEN OF VERSES
by Robert Louis Stevenosn. Beautifully illustrated in color by Diane Goode. Afterword by Peter Glassman. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1998 William Morrow hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Problem: DJ has been price-clipped and there is a gift inscription on the decorated end page. Can't believe someone would receive this book as a gift and not read it. Content: Goode's illustrations perfectly complement the poetry that has survived a century in print. Here is a comfortable world of sunny gardens and storybooks, where children play with toy soldiers and imaginary friends. You may remember some of these poems from your own childhood, such as "My Shadow," "The Swing," and "The Land of Counterpane." If time is any judge, this garden of delights will stay a perennial favorite. Reviewer: "This book is so beautifully illustrated I couldn't resist it. I have always loved the poems written by Stevenson and to see these drawings alongside the poems made them even more enjoyable. I looked at other printings of this book and this one was far superior. If you like the old fashioned drawings, this is the book for you." Ages 5 - Adult. [1 copy available]

CINDERELLA
illustrated by K. Y. Craft (Kinuko Craft). Simply beautiful color illustrations. Text is from a combo or The Red Fairy Book and Rackham's Fairy Tales. I assume the book was written by Craft as well. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 2000 Sea Star Books hardcover (pictorial boards -no DJ), first printing. Shelf wear to top and bottom spine and bottom corners. Content: As lavish as Craft's previous works, this retold fairy tale abounds with ornamental detail. Inspired by the opulent styles of 17th- and 18th-century France, the paintings are confections of luxurious clothing, densely vegetated woods and regally appointed ballrooms. A number of the pictures are breathtaking: Craft's painting of Cinderella's ornate gold carriage flying through the sky is as romantic as any fairy-tale aficionado could wish for. Elaborate initials introduce the narrative on each spread, and the text almost always faces full-page illustrations. The story, adapted from Arthur Rackham's and Andrew Lang's versions, contains pleasing touches as well as a moral. For example, Cinderella and the prince first meet when Cinderella nurses a lame bluebird in the forest; this same bluebird later becomes the fairy godmother. When the glass slipper fits Cinderella, the prince says, "How I knew that day in the woods that you were indeed special, but I should have fully recognized that heart whether clothed in rags or regalia." While this is not the most childlike version of Cinderella, it may be among the most sumptuous. [Note: For adult readers of Fantasy, Craft has produced some of the most beautiful cover art in the genre.] [1 copy available]

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS
by Judi Barrett. Adorable color illustrations by Ron Barrett. Condition: NEW 1982 Aladdin edition soft cover, 43rd printing (c. 2000s). Content: The tiny town of Chewandswallow was very much like any other tiny town except for its weather which came three times a day, at breakfast, lunch and dinner. But it never rained rain and it never snowed snow and it never blew just wind. It rained things like soup and juice. It snowed things like mashed potatoes. And sometimes the wind blew in storms of hamburgers. Life for the townspeople was delicious until the weather took a turn for the worse. The food got larger and larger and so did the portions. Chewandswallow was plagues by damaging floods and storms of huge food. The town was a mess and the pople feared for their lives. Something had to be done, and in a hurry. This was made into an adorable animated movie in 2009 which was directed by Phil Lord & Chris Miller. DOVE ISABEAU
by Jane Yolen. Wonderful color illustrations by Dennis Nolan. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1999 Harcourt Brace hard cover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. DJ shows light edge wear to top edge at spine. The bottom edges of the boards show rubbings from being shoved in and out of a shelf. Interior clean & tight. Content: A cold, craggy northern shore is the setting for Yolen's haunting tale of dark sorcery, which she richly embroiders with traditional fairy-tale conventions and imagery. The beautiful young Isabeau is as sweet and innocent as a dove, yet she possesses a fiery inner spirit. After her mother's death, she is left with only the Lady Darnton's cat for companionship. Her father remarries, but the woman is, in fact, a witch intent on destroying Isabeau. Using herbs of devilry, the stepmother turns the girl into a hideous red wyrm (dragon) who must eat the young men who come to fight it in order to survive. After 99 have met this fate, prince Kemp Owain, who has studied good magicks, returns to try to save the kingdom. The cat speaks to him in riddles, explaining how to break the evil spell; he succeeds but is turned to stone in the process. Isabeau then slays the witch and again it's the cat who helps bring the prince back to life. Nolan's dramatic watercolors are nothing short of magical. The blues and grays of the rocks, the sky, and the sea capture in turn the stark beauty and menacing nature of the cliffs. His realistic renderings of people are extremely effective, and his majestic wyrm could strike fear in the bravest of the brave. The exquisite book design and sophisticated themes of self-sacrifice, good triumphing over evil at a cost, and lost innocence suggest a mature audience. A powerful and appealing picture-book fantasy with a "happily ever after" ending. [1 copy] Grades 3 - 6. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE ELF'S HAT
byBrigitte Weninger. Translated from the German. Clever, wild, fun color illustrations by John A. Rowe. Condition: NEW 2002 North-South large paperback, first paperback printing. Clever adorable color illustrations by the Author - Imagination gone wild - ants holding the jump rope for a baby ant, etc.. FUN! Content: Home is where the hat is for the eight woodland creatures that find it lying on the forest floor. Reminiscent of Jan Brett's The Mitten, this wonderful adaptation of a popular Ukrainian folktale relates what becomes of an unsuspecting elf's hat after a low-lying branch knocks it off his head. Although those who move into the red cap range in size from a mouse to a bear, hospitality reigns supreme-until a presumptuous flea nibbles her way inside without even asking. A collective "NOOOOOO!" fills the hat and its inhabitants flee. The flea finds herself living alone until the clueless elf returns to claim his lost hat. Weninger creates good rhythm by using patterned language and short sentences. Children will love knowing what comes next as each new resident wanna-be chants, "A home-in-a-hat? Imagine that!/-Hello in there./Do you have some room to spare?" Rowe's caricaturelike illustrations reflect the humor of the tale. The wide white margins offer additional visual treats, such as animal tracks, bugs, worms, seed pods, etc. Vibrant colors depict the accommodating friends. This catchy read-aloud is a treat for the eyes. A book kids (and adults) of all ages will love. [1 copy available]

FABLES (Caldecott Medal Winner)
by Arnold Lobel. Cute, fun color illustrations by the Author. Condition: UNREAD 1980 HarperCollins large paperback, no printing given. Too "fresh" to be a 1980s book but . . . Tiny edge wear. Content: Reviewer: "Lobel deserves every inch of praise he received for this admirable work. Imagine how difficult it must have been to create not one, not two, but twenty absolutely new fables filled to the brim with wit and wisdom! Not an easy task. Still, Lobel not only faced up to the challenge but also accomplished it in a manner best befitting the gentleman he truly was. These are fabulous fables. Each tale contained in this book is acted out by a variety of different animals. No two stories contain the same kind of animals (with the possible exception of one fable centering on a hen and another on a rooster). The stories are short and easy for youngsters to understand. They are usually followed up with little moral lessons along the lines of "At times, a change of routine can be most healthful" or "When the need is strong, there are those who will believe anything". Admittedly, these are half a step away from becoming fortune cookie messages. Still, there's no denying that each and every one is true. Sometimes they become particularly poignant. I am thinking of the story about a young mischievous kangaroo that would throw spitballs in school and put tacks on chairs. When his teacher went to his home to inform his parents of their son's terrible behavior, he found them throwing spitballs at one another and doing just the kinds of things the little one had done in school. Moral: "A child's conduct will reflect the ways of his parents". Truer than most would think. Accompanying these droll adventures are Lobel's very particular illustrations. As an artist, Lobel has given an entirely new level of sophistication to his creations. Though undeniably Lobellian (is that a word?) they're far more detailed than anything much his work before or since." Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

by Jim Murphy. Wonderful detailed color illustrations by John Manders. Decorated end pages. Condition: NEW 2006 Clarion hard cover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. Tiny edge wear to DJ top edge. Content: A slightly scary, always amusing story about a lazy, good-for-nothing lad named Fergus O'Mara who offers only excuses when his mother asks him to do some chores. Then he blithely saunters off to town for a bit of play. Gouache and colored-pencil illustrations skillfully reveal his jaunty demeanor; his remarkably flexible body exudes action and attitude. Suddenly, he encounters a hooded Night-Demon with a lethal-looking scythe who declares, It is your time, Fergus O'Mara! The lad is only briefly frightened before he dismisses him as a bad dream. Soon, Fergus meets the demon again; now it looms over him and its red glowing eyes are revealed. Increasingly dramatic images, served up in shades of green, blue, and brown, convey the rising tension in the story. Amusingly, when told to dig his own grave, Fergus seems more concerned that he be rid of this hard work than frightened of his predicament. However, after he outwits the demon, he unexpectedly resolves to be the hardest working lad hereabouts. This sudden repentance appears to happen because he fears that the demon will come looking for him again. Children will appreciate this humorous ghost story; it makes a good read-aloud choice. Grades 2-4. [1 copy available]

FERNGULLY, THE LAST RAINFOREST (Follow Along DVD)
by 20th Century Fox. Packaged with a handle for easy "toting" for kids. Condition: NEW (shrink-wrapped) 20th Century Fox DVD with handle. Kids captioning in English & Spanish. Content: This edition of the movie encourages reading - the captioning (optional) is colorful and highlights "new" words. Environmentally friendly animated film with a strong message that doesn't club anyone over the head--but it certainly can't be missed. Zak (voiced by Christian Slater) is a heavy-machine operator whose job is to push over any vegetation in his path. He's shrunken to wee size, however, when Crysta (Samantha Mathis), a fairy of the forest, not only finds him cute but wants him to see the results of his handiwork. They end up battling Hexxus, an evil force imprisoned in a tree, which now wants to destroy all of Ferngully. Robin Williams offers genuine comic relief as a bat named Batty Koda. Agreeable without making much impact, it's a piffle of a film for one that deals with such strong subject matter. The 1992 movie was directed by Bill Kroyer and starred the voices of Tim Curry, Samantha Mathis, Robin Williams, Christian Slater, Robert Pastorelli, Cheech & Chong, and Kathleen Freeman. Fun with a message. [1 copy available]

THE GOBLIN AND THE EMPTY CHAIR
written by Mem Fox. As always, glorious color illustrations by Leo & Diane Dillon. Condition: NEW 2009 Beach Lane Books hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first ediiton, first printing. Content: Frightened by his own reflection, a goblin lives alone, hidden away from the world. One day as he watches from a distance, he sees a farmer who is so overcome with grief that he is unable to finish his work. The next day he sees the farmer's wife and the following day his daughter, both unable to set aside their sorrow and complete their chores. For three nights, the goblin does the family's work, unaware that each member in this silent, sorrowful family has seen him. At breakfast on the fourth day, as they stare at a chair vacant since the loss of a child in the winter, they rise and place another helping of food on the table. Then they open the door. Afraid to enter, the goblin hides, but when the family gets up to leave the table, food untouched, he joins them at breakfast. Each page contains a frame with a large square picture at the bottom and a top border illustration. Small goblin heads peer out from both sides of the frame. The stylized watercolor-and-ink illustrations, done in muted tones, are attractive. The story's message of kindness and compassion will appeal to many readers. Questions welcome. [1 copy available.]

GOOD FAERIES, BAD FAERIES
described and illustrated by Brian Froud. Edited by Terri Windling. Beautiful color and B&W drawings. Condition: Gently pre-read 1998 Simon & Schuster over-sized hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. Content: For older children and adults. Froud's collection of fanciful sketches encompasses both the benevolent and the malevolent species of the tribe Faeries. The structure of the book is reversible with the jacket proclaiming "Good Faeries," matched on the flip side with the title "Bad Faeries." An introduction to each section covers Faery Blights, Faery Defects, Glamour, and Music, and offers advice to humans on protection against the meddling of the Bad Faeries. There are paragraphs on naming, classification, and a further delineation of earth, water, fire, and air Faeries. This is followed by an exposition on Faery physiognomy-their wings, eyes, ears, heads, and size. Faery communication and healing are also discussed. The illustrations are the heart of the book, whether done in black and white, sepia, or full color. They are vivid, full of vitality, and wonderfully varied. With unnumbered pages, this is primarily a sketchbook for readers to leaf through and marvel at the creative bent that depicts the countenances of: "The Buttered Toast Faery," "The Wrong Decision Faery," and the "Pot Pixie." While not as glamorously elegant as their counterparts, the Bad Faeries are indeed beautiful in their own right. Handsomely jacketed, this is a whimsical, charming, artfully crafted book. Questions welcome. [1 copy only]

THE GRASSHOPPER'S SONG: An Aesop's Fable Revisited
by Nikki Giovanni. Wonderful color illustrations by Chris Raschka. Condition: NEW 2008 Candlewick hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Tiny shelf wear to top DJ edge. Content: This is an updated version of Aesop's fable! Artfully retold by a renowned poet and illustrated with energy and charm by a Caldecott Medalist, this twist on an Aesop fable is as witty as it is satisfying. Every year the Grasshoppers sing and play their instruments and the Ants work in rhythm to the music. The crops come up smoothly, and the Ants bring in the harvest to the Grasshoppers’ beat. But when winter comes, the Ants turn their backs on the Grasshoppers, and Jimmy Grasshopper finds this unfair. He’s hired Robin, Robin, Robin, and Wren to sue Abigail and Nestor Ant for what he deserves — R-E-S-P-E-C-T — and a one-half share of the harvest. But will a jury of his peers agree about the worth of art? Ages 10+. Questions welcome. [2 copies available]
