BUGS BEFORE TIME: Prehistoric Insects and Their Relatives
by Cathy Camper. Excellent detailed color illustrtions by Steve Kirk. Condition: UNREAD,BUT NOT PERFECT, 2002 Simon & Schuster hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), first printing. Problem: some child used a ballpoint pen to draw 5 short lines bottom loose endpage. I can't get these markings out. Most likely this was done at the bookstore. The interior is perfect - clean & tight. Content: Did you know that for every pound of people on earth, there are 300 pounds of insects? Or that millions of years ago some of these bugs actually weighed that much? Well, during prehistoric times, before dinosaurs ruled the earth, bugs did; and just like today the seas, skies, and lands were covered by these creepy-crawlers. There were dragonflies with wings that reached a yard across in length, and millipedes that grew to over six feet long! But what is even more fascinating is the fact that all of these creatures in some form or another learned to adapt and survive to become the insects and sea beasts of today. In this fully illustrated picture book, readers will be captivated by the detailed information of prehistoric insects, arachnids, and their relatives. Chock-full of facts about fossil formation, insect evolution, flight theories, and geologic time, Bugs Before Time will mesmerize entomologists of all ages. Author Cathy Camper's absorbing text, and artist Steve Kirk's extraordinary paintings combine to re-create a world where giants reigned. Wonderful section on my favorite fossil, Trilobites (see the 2nd graphic here). Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

Over 15 species of dinosaur, archosaur, marine reptile, and pterosaur are featured—from well-known creatures like T. Rex, Triceratops, and Diplodocus to lesser known ones like Rutiodon, Placerias, and Stygimoloch—in eyepopping, museum-quality illustrations. DINOSAURS, SPITFIRES, & SEA DRAGONS
by Christopher McGowan. Wonderful B&W sketches and photos. Condition: NEW 1992 Harvard University Press Tade Paperback, fourth printing. Perfect. Content: Reviewer: "This book is ideal for paleontology students or avid dinosaurphiles. Math is used extensively to demonstrate how dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures walked, ran, swam, flew, etc. The book gives a wonderful glimpse into how the hard science of paleontology is performed, instead of glossing over the math like many other popular books do. Once you finish this book, you will never look at dinosaurs the same way again." [1 copy available]

DRAGON HUNTER: Roy Chapman Andrews and the Central Asiatic Expeditions
by Charles Gallenkamp (The Maya). 2 B&W photo sections. Condition: NEW 2001 Viking Penguin (in association with the American Museum of Natural History) hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Tiny remainder mark. Content: It has long been rumoured (a fact?) that Andrews was the model for Indiana Jones - complete with the hat. Andrews was a fascinating man who led an exciting and useful life. "Roy Chapman Andrews was never much of a scholar, and anyone who looked at his high school report card might have foretold an undistinguished future. But, from an early age, Andrews's ambitions lay outside the social norm; an ardent fan of Robinson Crusoe and a devoted outdoorsman, Andrews wanted nothing more than to be an adventurer. He got his chance when he talked his way onto the staff of the American Museum of Natural History in 1906, under whose auspices, 15 years later, he was to mount the first of his central Asian expeditions. This decade-long program of exploration took Andrews and his team into the heart of the Gobi, one of the last uncharted regions on earth. Convinced for ideological as much as scientific reasons that humans originated not in Africa but in Asia, Andrews spent much of his time in the field seeking evidence of early man. That search would prove fruitless, for, as biographer Charles Gallenkamp notes, "nary a scrap of genuinely ancient human bone was ever retrieved by the Central Asian Expeditions." What Andrews and his colleagues did find, however, has propelled dozens of scientific missions ever since: huge caches of dinosaur bones at places such as Mongolia's Flaming Cliffs. These fossils helped demonstrate geological connections between Asia and North America, and they added dozens of new species to the paleontological record. All the while, Andrews contended with bandits, corrupt officials, invading armies, disease, and other dangers. After finishing Gallenkamp's vigorous book, readers will understand why Andrews should have served as the model for the movie character Indiana Jones -- who, if anything, pales by comparison to the real thing." [Gregory McNamee] This is one of my favorite books - and historical characters. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE GILDED DINOSAUR: The Fossil War Between E.D. Cope and D.C. Marsh and the Rise of American Science
by Mark Jaffe. B&W photo section. Condition: NEW 2000 Three Rivers Press Trade Paperback, first printing. Content: Feuds are common to all fields of human endeavor, but only scientists see them as integral to their work. Scientific progress is always contentious, as we are reminded by science writer Mark Jaffe in The Gilded Dinosaur, his delightful examination of the well-known war between paleontologists Edward Cope and O.C. Marsh in the context of the development of American science. Jaffe has delved deeply into the historical record to illuminate these large personalities and their struggle for access to physical and political territory on which to build their competing scientific empires. Fossil-hunting was inextricably linked with the expansion into the West, the explosion of industrial capitalism, and the new expression of America's status as a world power. Cope and Marsh, in part through their competition for scarce financial and scientific resources, forced the United States to build a scientific establishment combining elements of the public and private sectors. Jaffe is careful with his details; though there are many of them, they always illustrate his themes and portraits rather than distracting from them. Instead of reproducing the legendary protracted newspaper battle in its entirety, he samples a few headlines and paragraphs, then explores the motives and reactions of the principals. Cope comes across as far more sympathetic than Marsh, but the reader is left with the sense that this reflects historical truth more than journalistic bias. How can you take two egos, thousands of tons of rocks and bones, and make a scientific infrastructure so sturdy that today's schoolchildren grow up with Apatasaurus? Questions welcome. THE LOST DINOSAURS OF EGYPT
by William Nothdurft with Josh Smith. B&W photo section. Condition: UNREAD 2002 Random House hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), second printing. Content: Between 1910 and 1914, Ernst Stromer, a little-known German paleontologist and explorer, unearthed a wealth of dinosaur fossils in Egypt's Bahariya Oasis. Thirty years later, Stromer's discoveries were destroyed in a WWII Allied bombing raid, and the oasis lay neglected for decades until Josh Smith, a Penn State doctoral candidate in paleontology, decided to retrace Stromer's footsteps in 1999. Based on Stromer's detailed but rather dry journal entries and vivid, often humorous, testimonies from Smith and his research team, this lucid account highlights Stromer's discoveries (which include, among others, the bones of three predatory dinosaurs) and chronicles recent findings by Smith and his colleagues that set the science world buzzing. When Smith's entourage arrived in Bahariya after months of negotiating with MPH Entertainment, their primary financial supporter, and Egyptian officials, they were amazed to find fossils literally "floating" on the dry, sand-packed surface. Weeks later, the team uncovered its landmark find a 67-inch humerus, or upper arm bone, belonging to a new genus of dinosaur, which measured an impressive 80 to 100 feet in length and weighed between 65 and 70 tons. This discovery was compounded by the newsworthy conclusion made by field geologist Ken Lacovara that millions of years ago Egypt's western desert looked much like Florida's Everglades do now. Nothdurft, coauthor of the Ghosts of Everest, gracefully interweaves the team's exploits with Stromer's own Bahariya experiences and provides just enough scientific background to keep lay readers afloat. An engaging mix of history and desert drama, this Indiana Jones-type adventure is first-rate popular science. [1 copy available]
