Content: A phobic 10-year-old is trapped in a library of animated literary classics in this earnest tale of from Hanna-Barbera's CEO and a staff writer. Fleeing a thunderstorm, Richie Tyler comes on a large building guarded by marble lions; inside, ``Mr. Dewey'' hands him a library card and sends him into the shadowy stacks, where he falls in with three stubby-limbed companions- -''Adventure,'' in eyepatch and bandanna, motherly ``Fantasy,'' and purple, self-pitying ``Horror.'' Together, they witness Captain Ahab's climactic encounter with Moby Dick, are held prisoner by Long John Silver, and flee on a magic carpet from a fire-breathing dragon, among other brief encounters. The original 1961 movie was directed by David Swift and starred Haley Mills (times 2), Maureen O'Hara, Brian Keith, Cathleen Nesbitt, Charles Ruggles, and Joanna Barnes. The 1998 movie starred Lindsay Lohan (also times 2), the fabulous Dennis Quaid, the late Natasha Richardson, Elaine Hendrix, Lisa Ann Walter, Polly Holliday, and, in a nice turn, Joanna Barnes as the mother of Meredith Blake. Content: One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children's book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he's produced. The Polar Express rings with vitality and wonder. The 2004 movie was directed by Robert Zemeckis and starred Tom Hanks, Leslie Harter Zemeckis, Eddie Deezen, Nona Gaye, and Peter Scolari. Content: The first half of this film, set hundreds of years ago, shows how the old man who eventually became Santa Claus was given immortality and chosen to deliver toys to all the children of the world. The second half moves into the modern era, in which Patch, the head elf, strikes out on his own and falls in with an evil toy manufacturer who wants to corner the market and eliminate Santa Claus. This 1985 movie starred David Huddleston (Santa Claus), Dudley Moore (Patch), John Lithgow (the toy maker), & Judy Cornwell (Mrs. Santa Claus). SHREK!

Content: Argh, it's Shrek, spitting flame and venting smoke, even uglier than his parents, who kick him goodbye and send him off in the world. He's off on a linear journey to find his true love, foretold by a witch after she recovers from the sight of him. In a maniacal version of the hero's quest, he finds helpers and perils along the way: a dragon, a dream, a donkey, and more. The text rolls right along, here breaking into rhyme, there into knightish talk ("You there, varlet . . . why so blithe?"), there into outright silliness ("Pheasant, peasant? What a pleasant present!") Perfectly pleased with his hideous self, Shrek finally gains entrance to the ugly princess' castle, and after an operatic duet, the two are united, the bride carrying a cactus for a bouquet. The pictures are just as nutty as the story, blending with the text so thoroughly, sometimes echoing, sometimes expanding it, that it's hard to imagine one without the other. It's all here for Steig fans: magic, animism, chaos, self-reliance, hope, and fulfillment, and from one offbeat episode to the next, it all hangs together to make Shrek's destiny seem just right. The fast-forward movement of the story and the inventive, challenging language, full of surprises, make this especially fun to read aloud. Of course, everyone knows about the movie inspired by this book, so I won't bore you with the details. [1 copy available]
