AMERICAN INDIANS AMERICAN PRESIDENTS: A History
edited by Clifford E. Trafzer. Wonderful color, B&W and sepia era photos illustrate. Condition: NEW 2009 Smithsonian large hard cover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Thin remainder mark bottom edges. Content: When the American colonies defeated Britain during the War for Independence, Native American leaders began to establish diplomatic relations with the new nation. Here, for the first time, is the little-known history of American Indians and American presidents, what they said and felt about one another, and what their words tell us about the history of the United States. Focused on major turning points in Native American history, these pages show how American Indians interpreted the power and prestige of the presidency, and advanced their own agenda for tribal sovereignty, from the age of George Washington to the present day. In addition to exploring a pantheon of Indian leaders, from Little Turtle to Robert Yellowtail, this book also provides new—and often unexpected—perspectives on the presidents. Thomas Jefferson, traditionally portrayed as the Indians' friend, emerges as a master of the art of Indian dispossession. Richard Nixon, long-tarnished by the Watergate scandal, was in reality a champion of tribal self-determination—a position that sprang, in part, from his Quaker origins. Using inaugural addresses, proclamations, Indian Agency records, private correspondence, memoirs, petitions, photographs, and objects from the collections of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, American Indians/American Presidents illuminates the relationship between these diverse leaders, the Native Americans' commitment to tribal self-determination, and the social, geographic, and political evolution of the United States over more than two centuries. ANOTHER AMERICA: Native American Maps and the History of Our Land
by Mark Warhus. B&W photos, maps, & drawings illustrate. Condition: NEW 1997 St. Martin's hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: The Europeans who conquered the Americas and their descendants were not the first to map the hemisphere, museum curator Mark Warhus writes in this fascinating, richly illustrated study of Native American cartography. Indian maps -- made on buffalo skins, rocks, bark, and, later, paper -- claimed territorial rights, explained treaties among nations, delineated trade routes, and showed the locations of resources. Many of those maps wound up in dusty attics and the back shelves of museums, where Warhus has hunted them out; his stories of finding these lost treasures are as illuminating as his interpretations of what might be called pre-scientific ways of graphically describing the land. These maps, he writes, are of importance today not only for their own sake, but also as evidence of historic holdings in current claims over lost territories. Many of the maps are astonishingly detailed -- one, made by an Iowa Indian in the mid-1850s, shows the tributaries of the Mississippi River nearly as well as any modern chart, while another, made by one of the last members of the Beothuck people of Newfoundland, is an extraordinary cultural atlas of the northern Atlantic seaboard at the time of the European arrival. To his account of the making of these maps Warhus adds a rich anecdotal history, telling the stories of the kidnaped Indian Miguel, forced to make maps of the southern Plains for the Spanish conquistadors, and of other Native Americans whose knowledge of the countryside was used to the invaders' advantage. Unique look at Native American history. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

CUSTER'S FALL: the Native American Side of the Story
by David Humphreys Miller. B&W drawings illustrate. Author's painting cover art. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1992 Meredian Trade Paperback, third printing. Light edgewear with light tanning to page edges. Content: Reviewer: "This book provides interesting reading for Custerphiles. It markedly shows that no one, not even the native participants knew what was happening on all parts of the battlefield that day. Each had his own perspective of the area immediatly around him and that changed from each individuals perspective. In the long run I would go with eyewitness accounts unless directly refuted with iron clad evidence. The author tried to present the native side as they experienced the battle. He did a great job, but left us with just as many unanswered questions as we started with. Still a good book to include in a library. It is not a favorite with revisionist historians. DAUGHTERS OF THE EARTH: The Lives & Legends of American Indian Women
by Carolyn Niethammer. B&w photos illustrate. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1977 Collier Books Trade Paperback edition, 15th printing. Small edgewear with pale hinge crease caused by putting a name on the flyleaf. Interior clean & tight. Content: This is a controversial book and I'll try to give you both sides. Anglo women said this: Niethammer offers a wide-ranged collection of historical information, stories, myths, and taboos connected with the lives of American Indian women, using the female rites of passage as the structure of her book. Her style is mostly descriptive and provides an insight into the hardships, the challenges, and most of all the variety of the lives of American Indian women. The author does not romanticize American Indian women, nor does it consider them primitives. But most of all it does not look upon their lives from a modern feminist point of view. To cut a long story short: if you want to gain an insight into American Indian women's lives of the past - read this book!" The Native American women said this: Daughters of the Earth is one of the most offensive books I have ever read about Native American women. More than anything, I am shocked and sickened by the lack of respect for the author's subject and what feels like tabloid pandering and sensationalism." Take your pick. I did find some useful information in the book. [1 copy available]

THE DISINHERITED: The Lost Birthright of the American Indian
by Dale Van Every. Condition: UNREAD 1980 Avon Discus paperback, first printing. Interior clean & tight but has heavy tanning to page edges. B&W maps. Content: The American government's dispersal of the great Indian nations of the southeast is one of the ugliest chapters of our history. In tribal lands the Indians were beginning willingly to adapt to the ways of the white man - operating plantations, schooling their children, moving toward the mainstream of early 19th century life. Then suddenly they were driven from their native lands at gunpoint. They lost all that had been theirs and were moved westward in the pitiful forced migration of the disinherited. GAMBLER WAY:
Indian Gaming in Mythology, History and Archaeology in North America

by Kathryn Gabriel. B&W photos & drawings illustrate. Condition: NEW 1996 Johnson Books Trade Paperback, first printing. Content: Everything old is new again, it seems. The gambling that during the past decade has blossomed on Indian land across America is not, as many assume, a new ruination heaped upon noble savages by a corrupt capitalist culture. Far from it. Rather, gambling is like tobacco--deeply rooted in the religious and spiritual beliefs of Native North Americans. In this fascinating study, Gabriel not only relays some of the many myths connected with Indian gaming but examines the symbolic importance to Indians of gambling as a way of keeping the cosmic order from descending into chaos. In addition, she scrutinizes the way in which gambling formerly had economic importance for Indians, as a method of wealth redistribution. Amply researched and fluidly written, this is an exemplary and intriguing work of anthropology. Excellent read. Questions welcome [1 copy available]

THE GREAT CIRCLE: A History of the First Nations
by Neil Philip. Foreword by Dennis Hastings. Decorated end pages. B&W art reproductions & many B&W era photos. Condition: NEW 2006 Clarion hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacaket), first printing. Tiny edge wear at DJ corners. Content: Philip's well-balanced account begins with the clash between worldviews. European settlers came to North America with a doctrine of possession and dominance, of people over nature, and more technological society over less, while First Nations cultures view the Earth as a great wheel, with all people and animals joined together, all nature part of the connecting web. How the connectional perspective lost out to that of domination and rapaciousness, and how Native American tribes are reclaiming their cultural heritage, is the subject of this sensitively written, beautifully crafted work. Seven chapters cover general Native American history as well as the histories, cultures, and religions of several tribes, including the Seminole, the Modoc, the Lakota, and the Shawnee. Primary sources are incorporated into the narrative and extensively documented. Period photographs and reproductions are well placed, and their lengthy captions add to the information in the text. The picture that emerges is clear and sobering, at once desperately sad and cautiously uplifting, as various tribes begin the task of reclaiming their cultures and their environments. Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs, and Conditions of NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS, Written During Eight Years' Travel (1832 - amongst the Wildest Tribes of Indians in North America. Volume 1
by George Catlin. Over 300 color & B&W illustrations - paintings by Catlin. Condition: NEW 1973 Dover Publications Trade Paperback, first thus. Perfect. Content: This is one of those books that other writers of Native American history, anthropology, and art document as a "source." Reviewer: "There are two ways of looking at this book. For any serious student, anthropologist or researcher interested in the history of the Plains Indians, this is clearly an important book. Catlin offers detailed, first-hand descriptions of Indian culture and customs of the 1830s, preserving in text and pictures a way of life that would soon disappear. For the more casual reader, "Letters and Notes" still offers much, but you will need to be more selective. Catlin, for example, provides meticulous descriptions of the Indians' clothing, jewelry, weapons, cooking instruments and other artifacts. The reader can get bogged down in these sections, so unless you have a particular interest in any of these things, it's best to skim past them. Skip ahead to the action. Find the sections where Catlin recounts events that he witnessed or directly participated in. Catlin's account of buffalo hunting, for example, is vivid and exciting. Some other parts are funny, such as the dog feast." One of those must-read books. [1 copy available]

by George Catlin. Over 300 color & B&W illustrations - paintings by Catlin. Condition: NEW 1973 Dover Publications Trade Paperback, first thus. Perfect. Content: This is one of those books that other writers of Native American history, anthropology, and art cite as a "source." Reviewer: "Although the writing style is archaic, to the modern reader, and his art is stiff and two-dimensional, Catlin manages in these volumes to convey the wonder and limitless beauty of a wild land. He captures the individual personality of many of the warriors, chiefs and women he met. George Catlin saw with an unusual clarity the inevitable end of the way of life of his subjects. And saw it long before most in civilized America. His goal was to record the variety, habits, and lifestyle of a people he realized would soon be gone. In the process he left us with a work of ethnography that is detailed, objective, and not riddled with interpretation. AND--most of it is a great read." One of those must-read books. THE PATRIOT CHIEFS: A Chronicle of American Indian Resistance
by Alvin M. Josephy, Jr. Condition: Gently pre-read 1966 Viking Trade Paperback, no printing given. Problems: Edge wear with rubbings along spine and a tiny "tear" top spine at hinge. Interior clean & tight. Content: Reviewer: "Throughout the three centuries of conflict over North America, Indians consistently produced leaders of high quality who tried desperately to stem the tide, to stop the steady loss of lands. That they ultimately did not succeed does not say anything about their character. Josephy has written a detailed history of nine of the most successful leaders, those who most challenged the European invaders, their armies and all. Starting from the nearly mythical Hiawatha, who unlike the hero of Longfellow's epic, did not live in Minnesota, but in upstate New York, he follows the advancing line of the colonists across the continent, to end with the inspiring tale of the Nez Perces led by Chief Joseph. "King Philip" of New England, whose real name was Metacom, was the first to try to build a pan-tribal alliance against the land grabbers. He was followed by such men as Pope of the Pueblo peoples, Pontiac, and Tecumseh. Asi-Yaholo (known to history as Osceola) of the Seminoles, Black Hawk of the Sauk, and Crazy Horse of the Lakota round out the roster of famous Indian leaders. Though I felt that the Crazy Horse chapter contained too many extraneous details of the comings and goings of Indian bands and white troopers, in general THE PATRIOT CHIEFS is very well-written, bringing in Indian origins, culture, and ways of life. Though the Indians ultimately lost, you cannot fail to be impressed with their courage and determination to defend their homes and people. Perhaps the USA is the "land of the brave", because all human beings possess bravery in varying quantities. Reading this book, I would have to question "land of the free"...free for whom ? Nearly all these leaders were betrayed, their peoples exiled or killed, and every agreement broken. We did get their land for free. It is all a saddening, depressing tale, but definitely worth reading." [1 copy available]

NATIVE LAND
by Jamake Highwater. B&W photos & maps throughout. Condition: UNREAD 1995 Barness & Noble hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), reissue, first printig. Content: Highwater has won much acclaim for his work on the American Indians, and this elaboration is a colorful panorama of the Indians' worlds until the white man took their lands. Their civilizations rose and fell many times before culminating in such wondrous cities as Tenochtitlan (ancient Mexico City), which dazzled the conquistadors, for it was five times the size of London. A marvel of city planning, built in the middle of a lake, surrounded by floating gardens, it was connected to the mainland by causeways and aqueducts. Though these civilizations have yet to yield up all their secrets, Highwater's book gives a very readable account. Covers all Mesoamerican civilizarions, Andean civilizations, the Mound Builders and early Plans Tribes. Some information is dated, of course, but overall still very relevant. (1 copy available)

by Richard C. Trexler. George Catlin art work cover. Condition: UNREAD 1995 Cornell University Press hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), assumed first printing. B&W photos and drawings illustrate. Content: "An absolutely fascinating book on male sexual culture in Europe and the Americas during the conquest which will shock and take one's breath away." Reviewer: "Trexler's study of pre-conquest sexuality is thorough and thought-provoking. He investigates countless indigenous and Spanish sources to come up with a compelling argument that berdaches -- indigenous males who cross-dressed and perfomed female sex and social roles -- were part of the majority of indigenous cultures. He also demonstrates how those individuals were viewed by their peers and by the Spanish, and how the Spanish/European fear of homosexuality, specifically "passive" homosexuality, is responsible for the disappearance of the berdache. this book was highly readable for the more novice reader, but incredibly well documented (one hundred pages of notes) for the more academic reader. This book will likely go down as the definitive study on pre-conquest indigenous (homo)sexuality." [1 copy available]

WAR DANCE: Plains Indian Musical Performance
by William K. Powers. B&W photos throughout. Condition: NEW 1992 Univ. of Arizona Press Trade Paperback, second printing. Content: The Indian powwow, with its colorful war dance, is among the most vital aspects of American Indian culture. William Powers has witnessed both the traditions and trends in Plains Indian music and dance over the past thirty years, and here encapsulates his long career in what may be the first book that deals with Plains Indian musical culture as a unit. After providing background material on the study of American Indian music, Powers gives a full description of the popular war dance, discusses the powwow as the context in which the war dance appears, and describes associated dances. While observing that a fascination with "pan-Indianism" temporarily misdirected the study of Plains Indian music and dance by focusing too sharply on what many believed was a nationalization of American Indians, Powers notes that individual tribes continue to be concerned with maintaining their ethnic identities through their styles of music and dance. In the balance of the book, Powers offers essays describing Plains songs available on disc and tape, including notes on the history and culture of tribes and some translations of Lakota songs. A concluding essay offers some observations of why Plains Indian music and dance have received the interest they have and why they will continue to symbolize a burgeoning contemporary American Indian culture--not only on the Plains, but in every corner of the world where American Indians are respected, admired, and imitated. by Robert F. Berkhofer, Jr. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1979 Vintage Trade Paperback, no printing given. Light edge wear with moderate tanning to page edges. Content: Reviewer: "is an invaluable text that compliments the ongoing ethnic studies/post-colonial studies canon excellently. Berkhofer enters the archival images that we as Americans have of The Indian (in its dualistic Good/Bad Native model), to deconstruct it, and to ultimately reveal the historical opportunities and reasons why there was a national production of such images in the first place. In many ways, Berkhoker's "The White Man's Indian" is a perfect companion to Edward Said's seminal text "Orientalism" in that what each aims to do is not to rest on simply recognizing stereotypes ("The Native", "The Oriental"), but to situate The Image in its historical socio-economic context, and to have critiques of The Image lead us deeper into the complexities of national hegemonic (re)productions of power. Berkhofer does not just repeat ad nauseum, "This is a stereotype", "That is a stereotype", etc. Instead, he looks at how the polarization of peoples into Old World and New World affected whole schools of thought and culture, like Evolutionism, Anthropology, and Christian theories of human genealogy. I would say that this text is alligned with the growing body of literature and scholarship that comes out of post-colonial critiques of the first-world's narcissistic (and violent) stranglehold on the production of self-aggrandizing myth making. And so, for contributing sorely needed scholarship that counter-pushes against our internalized presuppositions of "The Native" - deriving somewhere between Disney's Pochahontas and Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade - "The White Man's Indian" should be read by anyone who has a stake in resisting neocolonialism - which is to say, everyone.
