Content: The Europeans who conquered the Americas and their descendants were not the first to map the hemisphere, museum curator Mark Warhus writes in this fascinating, richly illustrated study of Native American cartography. Indian maps -- made on buffalo skins, rocks, bark, and, later, paper -- claimed territorial rights, explained treaties among nations, delineated trade routes, and showed the locations of resources. In the long run I would go with eyewitness accounts unless directly refuted with iron clad evidence. The author tried to present the native side as they experienced the battle. He did a great job, but left us with just as many unanswered questions as we started with. Still a good book to include in a library. It is not a favorite with revisionist historians. Her style is mostly descriptive and provides an insight into the hardships, the challenges, and most of all the variety of the lives of American Indian women. The author does not romanticize American Indian women, nor does it consider them primitives. But most of all it does not look upon their lives from a modern feminist point of view. To cut a long story short: if you want to gain an insight into American Indian women's lives of the past - read this book!" The Native American women said this: Daughters of the Earth is one of the most offensive books I have ever read about Native American women. More than anything, I am shocked and sickened by the lack of respect for the author's subject and what feels like tabloid pandering and sensationalism." Take your pick. Catlin offers detailed, first-hand descriptions of Indian culture and customs of the 1830s, preserving in text and pictures a way of life that would soon disappear. For the more casual reader, "Letters and Notes" still offers much, but you will need to be more selective. Catlin, for example, provides meticulous descriptions of the Indians' clothing, jewelry, weapons, cooking instruments and other artifacts. The reader can get bogged down in these sections, so unless you have a particular interest in any of these things, it's best to skim past them. Skip ahead to the action. Find the sections where Catlin recounts events that he witnessed or directly participated in. Catlin's account of buffalo hunting, for example, is vivid and exciting. Content: Reviewer: "Throughout the three centuries of conflict over North America, Indians consistently produced leaders of high quality who tried desperately to stem the tide, to stop the steady loss of lands. That they ultimately did not succeed does not say anything about their character. Josephy has written a detailed history of nine of the most successful leaders, those who most challenged the European invaders, their armies and all. Starting from the nearly mythical Hiawatha, who unlike the hero of Longfellow's epic, did not live in Minnesota, but in upstate New York, he follows the advancing line of the colonists across the continent, to end with the inspiring tale of the Nez Perces led by Chief Joseph. "King Philip" of New England, whose real name was Metacom, was the first to try to build a pan-tribal alliance against the land grabbers. He was followed by such men as Pope of the Pueblo peoples, Pontiac, and Tecumseh. Asi-Yaholo (known to history as Osceola) of the Seminoles, Black Hawk of the Sauk, and Crazy Horse of the Lakota round out the roster of famous Indian leaders. Though I felt that the Crazy Horse chapter contained too many extraneous details of the comings and goings of Indian bands and white troopers, in general THE PATRIOT CHIEFS is very well-written, bringing in Indian origins, culture, and ways of life. Though the Indians ultimately lost, you cannot fail to be impressed with their courage and determination to defend their homes and people. Perhaps the USA is the "land of the brave", because all human beings possess bravery in varying quantities. Reading this book, I would have to question "land of the free"...free for whom ? Nearly all these leaders were betrayed, their peoples exiled or killed, and every agreement broken. We did get their land for free. A marvel of city planning, built in the middle of a lake, surrounded by floating gardens, it was connected to the mainland by causeways and aqueducts. Though these civilizations have yet to yield up all their secrets, Highwater's book gives a very readable account. Berkhofer enters the archival images that we as Americans have of The Indian (in its dualistic Good/Bad Native model), to deconstruct it, and to ultimately reveal the historical opportunities and reasons why there was a national production of such images in the first place. In many ways, Berkhoker's "The White Man's Indian" is a perfect companion to Edward Said's seminal text "Orientalism" in that what each aims to do is not to rest on simply recognizing stereotypes ("The Native", "The Oriental"), but to situate The Image in its historical socio-economic context, and to have critiques of The Image lead us deeper into the complexities of national hegemonic (re)productions of power. Berkhofer does not just repeat ad nauseum, "This is a stereotype", "That is a stereotype", etc. Instead, he looks at how the polarization of peoples into Old World and New World affected whole schools of thought and culture, like Evolutionism, Anthropology, and Christian theories of human genealogy. I would say that this text is alligned with the growing body of literature and scholarship that comes out of post-colonial critiques of the first-world's narcissistic (and violent) stranglehold on the production of self-aggrandizing myth making. And so, for contributing sorely needed scholarship that counter-pushes against our internalized presuppositions of "The Native" - deriving somewhere between Disney's Pochahontas and Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade - "The White Man's Indian" should be read by anyone who has a stake in resisting neocolonialism - which is to say, everyone.
